I'm being trolled.
I’m taking a refresher calculus course and multivarious calculus simultaneously (3 week head st art on the refresher course so I don’t get totally ele ctro murdercu ted by multi-calc) and so far my multi-calc professor has spent most of the time making terrible, TERRIBLE dad jokes. And now this. The first quiz...

If he likes making dad jokes, I’ll bet the answer is 417126

You should answer that question. I had a Chemistry professor once who had a thing about folks not following directions. On the final, the directions said go to question 67 (or whatever number it was), answer C and turn in your test. I did that and turned in the test for a 100 on the final. Everyone else in the room was actually taking the exam and stopped to look at the guy turning it in 30 seconds after the exam started. I later learned that everyone who didn’t read the directions got whatever grade the earned on the rest of the exam they didn’t have to take.

You’re probably assuming that those numbers are in base 10...

Well, you’re not wrong. I am making that assumption.
There’s a clock in the top right corner of the page.... Could that be a subtle hint ? Mathematicians do always s eem to to be infatuated with base 12....

If and when I ever teach a class I will absolutely do this, particularly because the subject I’d be most qualified to teach requires careful and detail-oriented attention to rules.

Maybe the questions will get harder on the same scale as a factorial. You are really screwed if that happens.

If it’s not differential equations, it’s not really math.

That’s not calc, that’s 3rd grade math.

In that case I guess I’ve forgotten most of the math I knew.

All of the above. Or write your answer in Roman numerals.

It’s been a while since I was on a computer but isn’t there always a clock in the top right?

No....you are being tested. There’s a big difference.
Plenty of people pay up for courses they haven't got the capacity to complete in the expectation that they'll get what they think they've paid for...and course conveners like to know early on who those schmucks are.

My AP students are terrible at “basic math” , if you took away their calculator this problem would probably give them night terrors.

Have they just forgetten the simple steps to solve basic arithmetic freehand , or do they really not understand the underlying concepts? Either way... Yikes.
I have been known to ask some simple math questions to interviewees to weed out people I didn’t want working under me. I remember a woman taking out her phone to a dd up three 2-digit numbers....

I think its a generational thing and it would appear that outside of those select math memorization of the times tables in grade school they simply haven’t assimilated the ability to do it without the reassurance of the calculator. I’m almost willing to wager my salary against their inability to estimate being the same fundamental “grade school issue. ”

I want to do this on my final’s now, too bad my school has a policy on how long they have to sit for their exam.

“Write but do not solve the partial differential equation to relate....” that phrase strikes fear into the hearts of many students.
